My Little Scythe

   1-6 PLAYERS   |   AGES 8+   |   45 MINUTES

My Little Scythe! Stonemaier Games generously sent me this game for review and I finally had a chance to sit down and play it with my kids a couple days ago. Then we played it again and again all weekend!

OVERVIEW
In My Little Scythe, players control two miniatures that represent siblings from one of seven animal kingdoms participating in the Harvest Tournament! Players take turns to move, seek, or make their way to victory by gaining 4 trophies in 8 possible categories. If players cross paths a pie fight ensues and the player that throws the most pies scores one trophy, but goes down one space on the friendship track. Generally players collect apples, magic gems, magic cards, perform quests, and make upgrades to win!

STONEMAIER GAMES DESCRIPTION
My Little Scythe is a competitive, family-friendly game in which each player controls 2 animal miniatures embarking upon an adventure in the Kingdom of Pomme.

In an effort to be the first to earn 4 trophies from 8 possible categories, players take turns choosing to Move, Seek, or Make. These actions will allow players to increase their friendship and pies, power up their actions using upgrade tiles, complete quests, learn magic spells, discover precious resources through an innovative dice mechanism, deliver gems and apples to Castle Everfree, and perhaps even engage in a pie fight.

Some of My Little Scythe’s mechanisms are inspired by the bestselling game, Scythe. It caught the eye of Stonemaier Games as a fan-created print-and-play game in 2017 (it went on to win the BoardGameGeek 2017 award for best print-and-play game).

MY THOUGHTS
I cannot believe how well this game works. It feels like a medium weight game, but plays very light and fast. I played a six-player game with my wife and 4 of my children (pictured above) ages 3, 6, 9, and 13. The three and six year olds had fun and understood what their turn options were, but weren’t quite there with strategy. The nine year old totally grasped it, and the 13 year old won! Later our 12 year old joined us and she won (more on that below)! We also played with just adults and really enjoyed the game, though I prefer original Scythe when playing with adults.

Most games end in a tie and there are a series of tie-breakers. The last game we played was 4 players: my wife and our 12 and 13 year old daughters. I obtained my fourth trophy, triggering the "Grand Finale" (final round) and each player had one more turn to get as many trophies as they could. One daughter also got her final trophy, but because she was further along the friendship track, she was in the lead. My wife couldn't get the last trophy, but my other daughter did get her trophy, and because she was even further along on the friendship track, she won!

RECOMMEND?
Yes! My Little Scythe introduces children to games where everyone can pursue different paths toward victory, and even gives them the opportunity to win after someone scores 4 trophies! My only gripe with the game is that the setup and take-down feels like it takes as long as the game-play (I haven't timed it). BUT the inserts are very nice and helpful to keep things organized.
